During Monday's meeting with the New York Islanders, Leafs defenseman Rasmus Sandin dropped the gloves in what would be the first fight of his NHL career. He did so because of a knee-on-knee hit that Oliver Wahlstrom laid on Auston Matthews, which Sandin thought was a dirty play. The funniest thing about it all? Sandin had no idea who he was going after at first. It just so happens that Wahlstrom is a friend of his.

Following the game, the two Swedes met outside of the locker room to hash everything out and, I'm sure, share a laugh about the whole ordeal. Here's a snap from Michael Traikos, showing the two engaged in conversation after the game.

Sandin spoke with TSN's Mark Masters on Tuesday and explained that even though the two are friends away from the rink, neither took what happened on Monday to heart. They know that when they're on the ice, they both have a job to do.

"We know each other very well. That's off the ice. On the ice we're competitors but it was a little funny that it was him that was my first fight."

Sandin on his fight with Wahlstrom

Obviously, I'm sure Sandin would have hoped for a better result, as he really only landed one shot in the fight, on the way down, but took several hard shots from Wahlstrom, who is the larger player. Still, it's the act of sticking up for a teammate that is important. Sometimes, it's not whether you win or lose, but what you're fighting for. I'm sure everyone in the Leafs' locker room skated away with a lot more respect for Sandin after that one.
