It's not every day we see blockbuster trades in the NHL anymore. The latest one occurred last Friday with the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers, which involved Matthew Tkachuk going to Florida in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, former Mississauga Steelhead Cole Schwindt, and a conditional first-round pick in 2025.
Josh Wegman, a writer for The Score, suggested a J.T. Miller for New Jersey Devils Damon Severson trade could make a world of sense for both sides. The article explained how a trade could work for both teams, which in hindsight could work, but we've seen trades like this before where it's one-sided. A good example would be Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson. I'd imagine that this would not be the same sort of 1-for-1 situation though. I could see this one being multiple pieces heading to Vancouver for Miller.
If the Canucks were to land Severson, he would be a big help on their back end, but the one issue would be that Severson would become a UFA at the end of the season. Would he even consider re-upping with the Canucks, who are still years away from being legitimate condenders? The same could be said for Miller, however he seems like someone who might want to re-sign in New Jersey and compliment the young, up-and-coming core there.
I think both teams could make a deal work since the Devils have a lot of good young players coming up in their system. The clock is ticking on the Canucks to make up their mind on their star forward, as the Canucks still very much have the option of re-signing him or moving him elsewhere before the start of training camp. Something to watch for.
