Much was made of Kyle Dubas stating that Brendan Shanahan said there was no extension coming his way at the opening of training camp. Dubas is entering the final year of his deal and it has been widely discussed as to how his future and that of Auston Matthews will play out.

Some have said he will leave, some have said the Leafs need to win a round for him to stay and others have questioned why he isn't signed already. Sportsnet's Luke Fox wrote his predictions for the Leafs this season and one of them is about Dubas' future. Fox believes that Dubas will have an extension signed sooner rather than later, so long as the team doesn't stumble out of the gate. He said if it were to come in season it would be around Christmas time.

Given that Dubas said he didn't want it to or that he would let it become a distraction, getting an extension done as soon as possible makes the most sense. Not only that, but with an extension due for Matthews in July, do the Leafs really want to take a chance that a new GM will be able to get it done without the relationship that Dubas has forged with Matthews and his agent since 2016?

There will be plenty of extension talks for the Leafs this season and Dubas is just another one to check off the list.
