During a recent podcast appearance, Avery told "Blackballed" host James Di Fiore that he plans to ramp up his workouts over the next 7 months, continue skating to get his timing back and pursuing an opportunity at an NHL training camp this fall.
Avery is planning to travel, along with his family, to a Northern US State or somewhere in Canada to skate with NHLers for the summer to prepare him for training camp in September. The location that he's set his sights on for training camp this fall? Tampa Bay, Florida.
«That's the team I want to play for. That's the best team. It's the best state to live in, and I can wear my fucking Make America Great hats in interviews,»Avery said.
Avery has become known for his strong opinions on hockey, which he has on full display in his Cameo portfolio and through other video applications. That's not a total shock, given how Avery approached his playing career. He played on the edge and he was certainly never shy about using his mouth to create chaos in the process. On looking back on his NHL career and how he had conducted himself on the ice, Avery had this to say:
«Definitely no regretsmy shit talking was part of my arsenal. I was a small player in a big physical league where size dominates. For me that was part survival and part of my tool kit.»
Whether or not he can make it happen remains to be seen, but Avery certainly wouldn't be the first retired NHLer to make a comeback. It all boils down to whether or not he can get himself back into playing shape. From a conditioning standpoint, after going so long without playing, that could be a challenge, but "never say never" I suppose.
