ESPN's Kevin Weekes broke the Kadri news on Thursday, also mentioning that Monahan would be on the move. A short time later, TSN's Chris Johnston revealed that the Montreal Canadiens would be the team coming in to take the final year of Monahan's contract off the Flames' hands. Monahan is on the books for $6.375M and will be a UFA next summer.
Monahan struggled mightily in 2021-22, even when healthy, managing just 8 goals and 15 assists for a total of 23 points in 65 games. These are the lowest goal, assist and point totals in Monahan's entire 9-year NHL career.
Monahan has scored 20 or more goals in each of his first 7 NHL seasons and has amassed 212 goals and 462 points in 656 career NHL games. The former 6th overall pick (2013) also racked up 21 points in 30 career playoff games.
