Wright was thrilled to be selected by the Seattle Kraken when his name was finally called at 4th overall in his year's draft, but his NHL career hasn't gone as well as all parties had hoped, with Wright spending much of the year as a healthy scratch, making it into just 7 games, which ultimately led to a conditioning loan in the AHL last month.
Wright played 5 games with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds during his conditioning loan, racking up 4 goals and it all culminated with a call-up to the Kraken on Monday, just a little over 24 hours before the Kraken's game against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. Wouldn't ya know it? Shane Wright skated in his 8th game last night, his first back from his stint in the AHL, and he scored his first career NHL goal against the team that passed on him with the 1st overall pick.
Now it appears as though the Kraken will play another stretch of games without Wright in the lineup - only this time, it's not because of a demotion, nor is it due to an injury. The Kraken have announced that they will loan Wright to Team Canada for the upcoming selection camp in hopes of making the 2023 WJC roster for Canada.
It's highly likely that Wright will end up being a walk-on for the team, but nothing is a sure thing, as they say. Wright will have to put his skills on display in selection camp before his ticket to the WJC tournament is officially punched, but all signs point towards Wright helping Canada try to win gold later this month/early next month.
