During the offseason, Toronto Marlies captain Rich Clune announced he is retiring from pro hockey and joining the Maple Leafs professional development staff. As such, some expected veteran leader Kyle Clifford to take over the captaincy this season and to play a similar role as Clune did. But today, the Toronto Marlies made an announcement that confirmed that will not be the case. I'd imagine this means that there is a chance that the Leafs could still recall Clifford at some point this season.

The Marlies announced today that Logan Shaw will be the team's next captain. Shaw was signed to a three-year AHL deal this past offseason. It is rare that an AHL contract is signed for that long, so perhaps this announcement should not come as too big a surprise.

Logan Shaw currently leads the Toronto Marlies in points, with 24 in 21 games this season. His AHL single-season career high in points came back in 2018-19 season, when he posted a total of 51 in 70 games played. He has played 232 games at the NHL level for five different teams over the last seven years.

Congrats to Shaw on this great honour. I'm sure he'll do the Marlies proud!
