The Ottawa Senators have announced on Wednesday that they have signed 20-year-old forward Tim Stutzle to an 8-year extension that begins at the start of the 2023-24 season. The deal has a total value of $66.8M and an $8.35M AAV.

The Sens have been handing out a ton of money to players this off-season as they also inked Josh Norris to a lengthy extension worth nearly $8M per season and brought in hometown boy Claude Giroux on a 3-year deal worth $6.5M per season as well.

Stutzle is coming off of a career high 22 goals and 58 points in 79 games last season. Stutzle has the ability to play both wing and center, as he exhibited in the latter half of the year when the Sens were decimated with injuries. The deal is questionable in terms of dollar amount and years given that Stutzle only has 2 seasons under his belt.

What appears like a massive risk on the surface could just as easily turn into a steal of a deal if Stutzle can manage to take the next step in his career this season or next and emerge as the elite talent that he was viewed as when he was drafted 3rd overall in 2020.

Signing his long-term deal right away will give Stutzle the opportunity to sign one more max-term, huge money contract, as he'll be just 28 years old when this one expires.
