On the latest episode of The DFO Rundown, Frank Seravalli said that Pierre Engvall could be out due to a nagging injury.
"I do think they have been dealing with a little bit of an injury up-front. I think Pierre Engvall has been a little bit banged up this summer and may miss a little bit of time. So that would be one way to manage their cap a little bit is if Engvall is out, but all it's done is kick the can down the road."
Engvall is coming off a strong season setting career highs all across the board with 15 goals, 20 assists, and 35 points. That earned him a 1-year, $2.25M deal that will take him to free agency at the end of the season. Not only did he have a career year points wise, but he was also one of the Leafs' top penalty killers where he accounted for 15% of their league-leading 13 shorthanded goals.
If he is expected to miss some time, the Leafs could place him and his $2.25M cap hit on LTIR, which would bring the Leafs under the $82.5M cap limit by $757K. Now that doesn't free enough room to sign Rasmus Sandin, and it just buys the Buds a little time until Engvall returns, so Dubas has a little bit of breathing room to see how the roster shapes up during camp before making any decisions.
