Leafs GM Kyle Dubas has made it a point to hire intelligent people with a solid track record and good character. Maple Leafs assistant coach and powerplay guru Spencer Carbery certainly fits that mold, but as with anyone who is good at their job, the opportunity is always there for even your best people to move up and move on. All of this to say that Carbery has reportedly interviewed for the vacant head coaching position in San Jose and could soon be on the move.

Carbery just completed his first season as an assistant to Sheldon Keefe and is responsible for turning the Leafs' powerplay into the most potent in the league in just one year. Before Carbery took over, the Leafs' powerplay was ranked 16th. This past season however, the Leafs were the most dangerous team with the man advantage. Since there wasn't much change to the on-ice personnel on PP unit #1, let's just go ahead and assume Carbery had a lot to do with their success.

Earlier this summer Pierre LeBrun noted that teams may call and ask about interviewing him and he reportedly interviewed for a few vacancies during the coaching carousel, most notably in Boston, but ultimately remained with the Leafs. Before joining the Leafs, Carbery was Hershey Bears head coach from 2018-21, Providence Bruins assistant coach in 2017-18, and Saginaw Spirit head coach in 2016-17. he was named the AHL coach of the year for the 2020/21 season.
