After Nylander credited Matthews for creating the play, the media asked Sheldon Keefe about the goal as well. Keefe responded by saying, "If you watch any experienced & championship-calibre team, their people are taking charge of different situations. That is what you love to see: those guys take the initiative & execute".
Matthews had three weeks to come up with the play as he worked his way back from a knee injury suffered just prior to the All-Star break. He only missed 5 games thanks to the Leafs' bye week following the All-Star break and last night indicated that he is healthy and ready to go. He scored his 26th of the season later in the first off of a great feed from Nylander, which ended up being the game-winner.
