Against Chicago last night, William Nylander scored on a partial break off of the opening faceoff, just 9 seconds into the game. It kick-started a 3-point night for Nylander and 2-point night for Auston Matthews, fresh off of his injury in his first game back. Following the game, Nylander was asked if it was a set play or not and responded by saying that Matthews was the creator of it.

After Nylander credited Matthews for creating the play, the media asked Sheldon Keefe about the goal as well. Keefe responded by saying, "If you watch any experienced & championship-calibre team, their people are taking charge of different situations. That is what you love to see: those guys take the initiative & execute".

Matthews had three weeks to come up with the play as he worked his way back from a knee injury suffered just prior to the All-Star break. He only missed 5 games thanks to the Leafs' bye week following the All-Star break and last night indicated that he is healthy and ready to go. He scored his 26th of the season later in the first off of a great feed from Nylander, which ended up being the game-winner.
