It was another rough go for the Leafs' 2nd line in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. After the game, Sheldon Keefe had no problem calling out that line and especially William Nylander - whose lack of effort defensively led to the Habs' second goal.

After the game, Keefe was asked about Nylander - who was demoted to the 3rd line in exchange for Ilya Mikheyev. When asked whether or not he has been satisfied with Nylander's play in March, his response told the entire story.

"No, not close."

Keefe was pretty blunt when he was asked about Nylander's effort on the second goal as well.

"It's tough. Defensively, I don't know if we can play much better than that. How we controlled the neutral zone, not a lot happening, that's a tough one to give up. But to me, that was the third or fourth play for Will and I thought it was time. Obviously, things have been piling up on that line for a while, so it was overdue."

Nylander needs a wake up call every now and then and this demotion could be just that. Later in the game, he scored a goal to tie it up at 2, but other than that, he was lackluster tonight.

He's one of this team's most important players, but as of late, both his play and effort have not been up to standard and things need to change in his game in order to avoid another lost season for the Leafs.

Hopefully Nylander finally gets the message and this demotion can light a fire under him. Especially now that him and Tavares are split up as that line has been rough in 2022.
