Sheldon Keefe's post game comments about John Tavares leave fans with more questions than answers
Prior to last night's game against the Buffalo Sabres, John Tavares, Ryan O'Reilly, Mitch Marner and Sheldon Keefe all believed that their line was on the verge of breaking out with Marner going as far as saying they would need "one more game". Well, they needed all of 2 shifts to break out last night. The trio combined for 9 points in their first 3 minutes of ice time and a total of 13 points over the entire game. Marner led the way with 5 assists, with Tavares and O'Reilly each having 4 points and O'Reilly registering his fourth career hat-trick.
Following their dominating performance though, Sheldon Keefe walked back his previous comments about Tavares playing the wing. "I still feel at the end of the day we're going to have John back at centre."
His comment leaves Leaf fans with more questions than answers after such a dominating performance from what is now their top line as he said after the morning skate that he told Tavares they would be sticking with him on the wing for a while.
After such a dominating performance, could Keefe just be playing mind games with everyone? Does he believe he will roll with O'Reilly as the team's third line center once the playoffs role around knowing that he has the option to move him up depending on the game situation? It could be a little bit of both, but we will have a better understanding after their next practice and more importantly after lineup cards are submitted for the Leafs' next game Friday night against Minnesota.
