Through 10 appearances this season, Samsonov has amassed a 4-1-3 record, being pulled twice, and putting up a putrid 3.58 GAA and .878 SV%. Sammy had been trending upward of late, posting a .930 SV% or better in 3 of his last 5 games, but has not played since November 24th due to a mysterious illness.
On Tuesday, the Leafs appeared ready to welcome Samsonov back to practice, but the Russian netminder only skated for a few brief minutes before skating to the bench to have a short conversation with the trainer. He then made his way back to the locker room and did not return.
Following practice, Sheldon Keefe revealed that yesterday's brief skate was merely the first step in having Samsonov back with the team and that the plan is for Samsonov to return this week. He did, however, express some concerns.
Wednesday will provide Samsonov with another opportunity to skate prior to the team traveling to Ottawa for a Thursday night matchup with the Senators. With Samsonov not having played since November 24th, it's likely that Joseph Woll will start.
If, for whatever reason, Samsonov isn't ready to return, look for the Leafs to recall one of their AHL netminders - either Martin Jones or the red-hot Dennis Hildeby.
