The legend of Auston Matthews continues to grow, but while he begun to look like his same old dominant self in recent weeks, once again we have members of the Toronto media - in this case Nick Kypreos - talking about the chances of him leaving Toronto as a UFA in the summer of 2024 increasing.

Once again, it needs to be emphasized that Matthews is not eligible to sign an extension until July 1st, 2023, so until that time, we should all simply refrain from speculating. If, on that date, Matthews hasn't put pen to paper, I think we can all feel free to begin speculating. Until then, any theories are basically a waste of time and energy.

One reason why Matthews may opt to remain in Toronto, the largest hockey market in the free world, is the enormous endorsement opportunities it affords him. Today, Matthews and Canadian banking giant RBC are expected to announce a partnership.

This adds to the already impressive list of companies and corporations that Matthews has already aligned himself with over the course of his young career. Some of those partnerships include Apple, Bauer, CCM, Cargo Jet, Bet 99, Scotiabank, Lids, Upper Deck and more.

Look - Auston Matthews is a bona-fide megastar. Endorsement deals are going to be available to him wherever he goes, but the doors that have opened for him because of his status as one of the greatest active Leafs and perhaps one of the greatest Leafs of all-time are higher in number than would be afforded to him in a market like, say, Arizona.

Moreover, plenty of star players have the opportunity to walk via free agency and play for their hometown teams, but up until John Tavares came home to Toronto, it hasn't really happened all that often. Franchise players land in NHL cities as teenagers and often play the first 8-10 years of their professional lives in the same city. It has a tendency to become their new homes. They start families and make friends in these locations. In Matthews' case, he has built a life in Toronto. I wouldn't be too quick to assume he is counting down the days until he is able to leave. He's beloved in a market that is known for its volatility. He has transcended hockey because of his success in the toughest market to play in. He thrives under the brightest spotlight. I'd be shocked to see him leave that behind, personally.
