Post-game, Marner was asked if there was a sense of relief hitting the empty netter after missing his previous two opportunities. "Yeah, did you see me?! Phew. I can't wait to talk to my father. He's going to be like, 'What the hell are you doing on that pass on the 1st one?' Big Mike on the bench right away looked at me & couldn't believe I tried to pass it. He was pissed at me." You could see the sense of relief on him during his celebration and on the bench as PA announcer Mike Ross was announcing the goal.
Marner continued by addressing the standing ovation from Leaf Nation and what it means to accomplish it next to Auston Matthews saying, "It's pretty special. You know, [as a] kid growing up [I] would've never expected this. And now it's kind of reality. Him and I have been through a lot together and obviously want to achieve great things together."
Sheldon Keefe reunited Matthews and Marner for the third period with the streak on the line and it may have gone down to the wire, but in the end, they were able to get it done. Marner will look to become the solo franchise recordholder on Saturday night as the Leafs head to Tampa.
