Things got heated during the third period of the Leafs and Lightning game last night after Simmonds threw a massive hit on Lightning defenseman Jan Rutta.

Perry and Maroon both skated to Simmonds and tried to challenge him to a fight to which Simmonds did the right thing and skated away. It was not the time nor the place for Simmonds to fight and he knew that. Unfortunately, that led to Maroon and Perry jumping Lyubushkin and Rielly before all hell broke loose.

Of course, the Department of Player Safety decided they had to step in. Each of Simmonds, Maroon and Perry were fined $2500 for unsportsmanlike conduct as a result of their actions that led to the brawl. It doesn't make much sense that Simmonds is getting fined when he was trying to skate away from everything which is why Perry and Maroon jumped Rielly and Lyubushkin. At this point though we know that's just how DOPS works. They're consistently inconsistent with their decisions.

Clifford being offered a hearing for his hit on Colton in the first period is just another example. It was an unnecessary hit but he basically got a full game for it already. Meanwhile Jared Spurgeon of Minnesota only got a $5000 fine for intentionally trying to break Pavel Buchnevich's ankle during Game 1 of their series last night.
