A scary scene during the Blackhawks vs Sens game on Saturday, as Ottawa's Parker Kelly delivered a nasty hit from behind on Chicago's Connor Murphy at the beginning of the first period that left the Hawks defender unconscious.

Murphy was carrying the puck along the boards in the Sens' defensive zone when Kelly came in hot from the side. Murphy curled back in an attempt to avoid the hit, but Kelly had already committed to the hit and Murphy was absolutely levelled.

You could hear a pin drop as the trainers and medical staff tended to Murphy, who needed to be loaded onto a stretcher and carted off the ice and taken to hospital for observation.

Kelly had offered some stick taps from inside the penalty box while Murphy left the ice on the stretcher. It was pretty obvious that he did not intend to injure the Hawks defender.

Thankfully, Murphy was able to offer a thumbs up on his way off the ice, so at least he was awake and responsive. Our thoughts are with Murphy. Hopefully he makes a full and speedy recovery.
