As details emerge about the struggling club's new temporary home, the new arrangement has taken a turn from sad to just plain funny. As part of the new deal, the 'Yotes will have to be on their best behaviour', as Katie Strang and Sean Shapiro report.
Essentially, any bad press or scandal that emerges surrounding the Coyotes or team owner Alex Meruelo will void the deal. As well as any violation of:
Also revealed today was the fact that the Coyotes will not even be able to have their own logo at centre ice. ASU's logo will remain there as part of the agreement. The Coyotes won't be allowed to cover or replace any existing on-ice advertisements from ASU's sponsors, instead they will have the option to partner with them. They will also be prohibited from selling advertisements to competitors of ASU's advertisers.
I think its safe to say that Leafs fans have nothing to worry about when it comes to Matthews and the Coyotes, at the very least for the next 5 seasons. The hope is that Matthews will be partway through his shiny new 8 year extension with the Maple Leafs by that point anyway. Either way, it looks like the Coyotes are on thin ice, and we know how hot it gets in the desert. This could be the beginning of the end for Gary Bettman's pet franchise.
