This week, we saw the Vancouver swoop in and land disgruntled right-shot defenseman Ethan Bear from the Carolina Hurricanes, along with depth forward Lane Pederson, in exchange for a 2023 5th round pick. There were plenty of Leafs fans who had expressed a desire for the team to go out and get Bear from the Canes and once they saw the price that the Canucks paid, Leafs Nation was pretty disappointed.

On Saturday night, Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Leafs were indeed one of the teams who put in a call to the Canes on Ethan Bear. He also revealed that the draft pick was apparently a deal-breaker for the Leafs, who didn't want to limit themselves to only 4 picks in what is supposed to be a very deep draft next summer.

The Leafs also faced the issue of being at the 50/50 contract limit, so they'd have had to move out a contract to take Bear's. In the end, the Canes didn't want to work with the Leafs and elected to take the offer from the Canucks instead.
