Simmonds, who has been limited to just 14 points in 57 games this season, was a healthy scratch for the last two games for the Leafs, but what had really peaked the curiosity of Leafs fans was when Simmonds was moved to the NHL non-roster list after Thursday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Alex Steeves, who had been on an emergency recall from the AHL for the Leafs, has since been sent back to the Toronto Marlies. Perhaps his call up was just a creative way to help him earn a day or two of NHL pay.
It's unclear at this point whether Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has plans of re-inserting Simmonds back into the lineup for Saturday's game against the Nashville Predators -- Simmonds' former team -- or whether he'll be in the press box once again.
**Update - the Wayne Train is expected to be in the press box as a healthy scratch**
There was a lot of speculation that Simmonds would either be waived or traded with the Scarborough native having been added to the non-roster list, but with Simmer back on the roster, I suppose we can put that speculation to bed.
