Brooks, who signed a 2-year deal at just above the league minimum with the Philadelphia Flyers this summer, was originally a 4th round draft pick by the Leafs in 2016. He showed a lot of promise during his time with the AHL's Toronto Marlies and with the Leafs, but unfortunately, he was never anything more than a fringe player in Toronto.
Meanwhile, Dzingel signed a 1-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes at the league minimum this summer. A 7th round pick of the Ottawa Senators back in 2011, Dzingel has had mixed results in the NHL, with his best season occurring with the Sens back in 2018-19. Dzingel put up 44 points in 57 games that season, including 22 goals.
Dzingel was originally acquired by the Leafs last season from the Arizona Coyotes in the Nick Ritchie deal, but despite being acquired by the organization, he never actually played a game in Toronto. After the trade, the Leafs had subsequently placed Dzingel on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the Marlies, but he was picked up by the San Jose Sharks on waivers.
