Tyler Bertuzzi showed up to Leafs practice with very short hair, but his reason is amazing
From his missing tooth, his tongues-out skate style and minimalist tape jobs to his signature long, flowing hair, Tyler Bertuzzi's look is one that is unique among NHLers. At least, it was. Bertuzzi arrived back from the NHL's All-Star break with a new, clean-cut look. Normally, a player getting a haircut wouldn't be worth taking the time to read into, but Bertuzzi's explanation of his new look was just too good not to share.
Bertuzzi revealed that he had his hair cut off in order to donate it to children who lose their own hair during cancer treatments. As anyone who has ever dealt with cancer or knows someone who has dealt with it knows that chemotherapy takes an incredible toll on one's body. A common side effect is hair loss. The hair that once capped off Bertuzzi's glorious signature look will be used to make wigs for those children undergoing treatment who experience hair loss.
I can't stress enough how much I love this from Bertuzzi. His generosity will go a long way towards restoring a feeling of normalcy to the life of a child whose world has been turned upside down. It's well documented how important it is to stay positive while undergoing treatment, and how it can affect the outcome. By aiding in this, Bertuzzi's donation may go beyond putting a smile back on a child's face. It could help give them the strength needed to fight off the absolute nightmare that is childhood cancer.
