WJC update: Team USA vs. Switzerland cancelled, USA forced to forfeit
It seems as though COVID-19 has reared its ugly head once again, this time affecting the World Junior Hockey Championships, but more specifically, Team USA.
It's safe to assume that the reason for the postponement of the contest between the USA and Switzerland is a positive test, which is very unfortunate for Team USA, last year's tournament champs.
**Update, it was two positive tests on Team USA**
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that this is an issue on Team USA's side of things, and due to the fact that the tournament is on a strict schedule, USA will forfeit what should have been a fairly easy win.
Of course, the hope is that the tournament will be able to continue, but player safety has to be the priority here. We've already seen how fast the Omicron variant can spread, and if cancelling one game can save the tournament from having to shut down, it's worth it - and I'm sure USA Hockey feels the same way.
