With Gophers season coming to an end, Matthew Knies watch begins for Leafs Nation
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were eliminated from the Frozen Four tournament last night after falling to Minnesota State 5-1. Highly touted Leafs prospect Matthew Knies scored the only goal for the Gopher's on a 2-on-0.
In 3 games of the Frozen Four tournament Knies registered 3 goals and 1 assist. The Leafs have been waiting patiently for his season to end and now that it has, speculation will run rampant over the coming days about whether Knies will return to Minnesota next season or sign his entry level deal with the Leafs.
Unfortunately, he cannot do both as the NCAA prevents players from signing pro contracts and then being eligible to return to their college team, so there is no chance he signs a PTO for the remainder of the Leafs season and returns to Minnesota next season.
Reports have come out the past couple days that he was leaning towards returning to Minnesota next season, but now that the Frozen Four is over, expect Knies to take some time and weigh the pros and cons of both options heavily.
