For younger players, hockey practice is meant to be to teach them and prepare them for game action. Unfortunately on Thursday, a young player passed away after a puck was shot and struck him in the chest. Following the incident, he was taken to the hospital and even revived by paramedics, before sadly succumbing to his injuries.

Vsevolod Malkov, 14, was attending hockey practice for the school of KHL team SKA St. Petersburg, when a defender from the opposing team attempted a shot on net that just happened to hit Malkov. The youngster went into cardiac arrest and collapsed on the ice. Medics were called immediately and tried to revive Malkov. He was diagnosed with having a collapsed lung, a closed chest injury and contusions to the heart and lung.

There will be an internal investigation by the club, although Malkov's father has stated he doesn't blame anybody for his sons death. He provided a statement below.

"I do not see any culprits in this, to blame someone, I think, doesn't make any sense. This was purely an accident. It was a common practice, they were playing a minority five to attack four to defend. There was a shot, a defenseman's flick from the blue line, as I was told, I was not present, because parents are not allowed to practice. The puck hit the heart area and there was a cardiac arrest. Further there was resuscitation, but, unfortunately, without success."

Malkov has stated that the school has offered to pay for the funeral costs and will provide assistance that the family may require. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.

Accidental death in general is heartbreaking, but there are no words for the accidental death of a child.. horrible doesn't even do it justice. Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the entire family, his teammates and anyone else who knew the young player during this difficult time.
