The Toronto Maple Leafs came back from a two-goal deficit against the Colorado Avalanche, leaving the mile high city with a 4-3 win to end their four-game road trip, sending them back to Toronto on a high note. The Leafs were perfect on the road, winning all four of their games and have now won seven in a row for the first time since 2003-04.
Following his team's loss, Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was asked about the Leafs' performance and praised their defensive game.
"Number one, they're first in offence in the league in the last 10 games. And then you look at their defending numbers... I always feel like they don't get enough credit for the way they defend and how hard they defend and their chance suppression," Bednar said. "It's been good now for a couple of years, and yet they still get beat up over it at times, I think, because they're a really good offensive team. And, you know, there's a lot of weapons on the team, but they're committed to what they're doing on the defensive side of it. They put the whole package together here, especially in the last 10 games. And they're winning every night."
The Leafs' defensive game has always been a sore subject for the Toronto media and Leaf fans, but since Morgan Rielly's suspension, it has been noticeably different and better in every aspect. They have not had that one glaring mistake or lapse in defensive coverage that fans have become accustomed to in this most recent stretch, which has been the difference in a lot of games.
With the Leafs now back home for four games, beginning with a rematch against Vegas on Tuesday night, it will be interesting to see if they can continue their recent string of very good defensive play or if they slip back into old habits at home.
