Brad Marchand's recent comments on the Maple Leafs going viral
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand isn't known for his kindness on the ice, but on Tuesday, he had some surprising and very complimentary words for the Toronto Maple Leafs after 2 playoff games.
"They're playing a really good playoff-type game right now, you know. You knew they would. They're built different than in the past years. They're playing a lot more physical, very committed to forechecking, playing very tight defensively, so you got to give them credit. You know, they're one of the top teams for a reason, and then when you add their offense ability on top of that, they're a tough team to play right now."
The Game 2 score line of 3-2 Toronto appeared a lot closer than Game 1's 5-1 victory for Boston. The Bruins captain disagrees, saying the score line in Game 1 didn't tell the full picture.
"It was a different game than the score," Marchand said. "We have to continue to be better. You know, it's a very tight playoff series. We knew it was going to be a battle, and, you know, they showed up. They're playing for keeps."
General Manager Brad Treliving was clear when hired this summer that he wanted to bring in players that were "hard" to play against. Treliving's summer additions of Max Domi, Ryan Reaves, and Tyler Bertuzzi fit that mold. Treliving carried that philosophy into the trade deadline, adding Joel Edmundson and Ilya Lyubushkin to the roster as well.
Marchand's complimentary take on the Leafs is a far deviation from his usual mind games. Maybe this is an approach to hopefully have Toronto let their guard down a little bit or it could just be a moment of honesty from the Bruins captain. There aren't too many of those, so we should embrace it and take the compliment as Leaf fans.
