Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby and veteran winger Brad Marchand make it crystal clear to fans how they feel about Canadians booing the U.S. National Anthem.
In recent weeks, there has been a ton of discourse over the strained relationship between Canada and the United States over potential a potential tariff battle between the two allies.
Unfortunately, the political world has bled into sports once again, this time with fans in Canada booing the U.S. National Anthem when performed on Canadian soil.
Not only did it occur recently in Ottawa, but fans in Montreal also booed "The Star Spangled Banner" ahead of Team USA's matchup against Finland on Thursday, which didn't sit well with the U.S. players.
Not only has it bothered American forwards Matthew and
Brady Tkachuk, but some players for Team Canada have spoken up about it as well.
Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby wasn't interested in giving the issue more attention than it's already gotten, but he made it clear that Canadians respect both anthems.
"I'm not going to get into that. We respect the anthems, and I'll leave it at that."
Brad Marchand took a different approach to how he chose to address the subject. Marchand, who has played his entire career in the United States, believes that it's incredibly disrespectful to the U.S. players, who have nothing to do with politics.
"They should not be booing the Americans during that anthem. They have nothing to do with the political things that are going on. I do feel bad for those guys in that moment. I don't think it's right."
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman already addressed the issue on Friday's 32 Thoughts podcast, suggesting that we're likely to see fans in Montreal boo the U.S. Anthem yet again tomorrow night. Like Crosby and Marchand,
Friedman is not a fan of the booing, stating his belief that it's disrespectful to the soldiers who gave their lives for their nation.
Perhaps the fans will listen to Crosby and Marchand and show the U.S. players some respect on Saturday. If not, it may be a pretty hostile scene next week when the 4 Nations Face-Off shifts to Boston for the next stretch of games.
