Anyone who was a fan of the Maple Leafs between 2000-04 knows that Gary Roberts was a warrior. Roberts became a beloved Maple Leaf with his penchant for clutch playoff goals, big hits, leadership and physical toughness. His work ethic was tremendous and he was a fan favourite during a very fun stretch for the organization's loyal patrons.
He would later bring that reputation to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he played with another now former Leaf in Colby Armstrong. It was during his time in Pittsburgh that the future fitness guru and trainer of NHLers like Sidney Crosby would solidify his reputation for iron discipline. A brief look at his high performance training program tells you all you need to know about his commitment to health and fitness.
During a recent appearance on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, Armstrong told a hilarious story about Roberts that is almost entirely unbelievable. Why was it so unbelievable? Well, because Roberts had reportedly revealed to Armstrong that he had never once in his entire life eaten at a McDonald's restaurant.
That's right -- Gary Roberts has never had McDonald's, even as a child. Unfathomable, I know. After a few drinks, you'd think that Roberts would be more susceptible to peer pressure, but the consummate pro would not abandon his high level of discipline even for one night, and bite into a Big Mac. This fun little story about fast food describes the man perfectly.
Roberts was a special player. This current Leafs team could use a guy like him as they try to go deep in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Roberts was a bit of a unicorn and finding another guy like him is a lot easier said than done.
