Matthews was originally given a day-to-day injury designation earlier this week, prior to the Leafs' matchup against the Boston Bruins -- a game that the Leafs won handily by a score or 4-0. However, since being labeled as day-to-day, Matthews has not skated, even solo, which is certainly concerning.
There was some hope that Matthews would be able to return at some point this weekend. However, an update from Berube on Thursday pointed to perhaps a lengthier absence than initially expected. With today's announcement, that appears to be the more likely outcome.
Following practice on Friday morning ahead of tonight's game against Detroit, Berube has confirmed that Matthews is indeed out against the Red Wings, which means an extended look for Max Domi on the top line between Matthew Knies and Mitch Marner.
Matthews' injury is reportedly not linked to his previous wrist injury, which required surgical intervention just a couple of summers ago. Perhaps a bit of a silver-lining, but it still leaves a lot of mystery, intrigue and concern over what could potentially be ailing him now, especially since it was revealed that his injury was a "lingering" one and not brand new.
Thankfully, although Matthews will miss Friday's game and likely Saturday's as well, Berube says things are headed in the right direction. If we take him at his word, there appears to be no need for any concern of a potentially prolonged absence.
The Leafs have a meeting with the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow night and then host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, so hopefully these next few days continue to lead to some positive progress for the multi-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner.
