It hasn't been a dream start for the youngster, who came into training camp with a lot of pressure and a real possibility of making the opening night roster. Head coach Craig Berube understands the ebbs and flows of the sport, especially for a youngster with so much talent like Cowan, but for tonight's game, he just wants to see him play his game and be as comfortable as possible.
The 19-year-old is coming off of a fantastic campaign in the OHL with the London Knights, where he tallied 96 points in 54 regular season contests before adding an additional 34 points in just 18 playoff games en route to the championship. He also went to the finals of the Memorial Cup and represented Team Canada at the World Juniors.
If his time doesn't come this year, it's not the end of the world. He will have ample opportunities down the road and playing one more season with the Knights will only help with his skill set, confidence, and overall game.
