Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs face off against the Montreal Canadiens in what will be their 3rd pre-season game. While some are sounding the alarm bells after 2 early losses, the rest of Leafs Nation is keeping an eye on specific players and whether or not they can rise to the occasion. One of those players is top prospect, Easton Cowan.
It hasn't been a dream start for the youngster, who came into training camp with a lot of pressure and a real possibility of making the opening night roster. Head coach Craig Berube understands the ebbs and flows of the sport, especially for a youngster with so much talent like Cowan, but for tonight's game, he just wants to see him play his game and be as comfortable as possible.
While there's no real need to have concern for Cowan at this very moment, he will have a prime opportunity to show off his skillset tonight as he is expected to play on a line with Mitch Marner and Max Domi. If there was ever a time to impress the front office and coaching staff, this is certainly it.
The 19-year-old is coming off of a fantastic campaign in the OHL with the London Knights, where he tallied 96 points in 54 regular season contests before adding an additional 34 points in just 18 playoff games en route to the championship. He also went to the finals of the Memorial Cup and represented Team Canada at the World Juniors.
If his time doesn't come this year, it's not the end of the world. He will have ample opportunities down the road and playing one more season with the Knights will only help with his skill set, confidence, and overall game.
