David Kampf put on a clinic for Czechia in a 7-3 win over Sweden to propel his team to gold medal game, potentially against Leafs captain John Tavares and Canada.

Since Kyle Dubas signed David Kampf back in the summer of 2021, it was clear that there was something about the Czech centerman that set him apart from other depth options.

While not the most offensively adept forward out there, Kampf truly excels in the defensive aspects of the game, as well as in the faceoff dot and on the forecheck. He put those tools and more into action on Saturday against Group B favourites, Team Sweden, at the IIHF World Championship tournament.

Kampf posted an impressive stat line on Saturday, notching a goal, an assist and a +4 rating helped Czechia punch their ticket to Sunday's gold medal game, awaiting the winner of today's Canada/Switzerland game.

There's been a lot of talk this season about whether or not it might be time for the Leafs to move on from Kampf, but his performance at this World Championship tournament shows just how helpful a player he can be. He has moved up to 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points in 9 games, which far exceeds his typical level of production.

I'd imagine that Brad Treliving and Craig Berube are keeping a close eye on him in anticipation of their offseason roster decisions. Kampf may have just solidified his position with the Leafs with a guaranteed gold or silver medal after his showing in the tournament.
