With Toronto Maple Leafs' forward James van Riemsdyk having survived the 2018 NHL Trade Deadline, the next question is, will he be in Toronto to start the 2018-19 season. NHL Insider Darren Dreger spoke on the situation during a recent edition of TSN's Insider Trading. Dreger points mostly to the fact that there's been zero contract talks between the Leafs and JVR, meaning the Leafs probably aren't willing to match what JVR will get on the open market. The 28 year old is expected to make anywhere from $6million-$7million a year depending on the contract length. The cap hit for 2018-19 wouldn't be a problem for the Leafs, however it would cause major issues following next season. The Leafs are highly likely to sign Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner to extensions that will kick in for 2019-20 and the two are expected to be rewarded a significant pay increase. Along with William Nylander's upcoming extension, the chances of seeing JVR in Toronto for the 2018-19 season appear to be almost impossible.
