While his name became much more prominent during his time with the Maple Leafs, netminder Jack Campbell has spent time in the NHL with the Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings before landing in Toronto. Since then, he's also been with Edmonton Oilers, and most recently, the Detroit Red Wings, who put Campbell on waivers today.
Campbell entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program back in October. That was a few months after being bought out of the final three years of his contract by the Edmonton Oilers, and then being signed to a one year contract by Detroit.
Elliotte Friedman clarified what's happening by saying Campbell is now ready to return to play, which means he has to clear waivers first.
Hopefully Campbell has gotten the care he needed in the assistance program and is feeling more like himself. His one-year deal with the Red Wings is at the league minimum, but I sincerely doubt any team is clamoring to get him on their roster at the moment. It seems more likely that he'll be sent to Grand Rapids of the AHL after clearing.
Jack Campbell was, at one time, a great success story for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was someone who was never expected to be a number one goaltender, and earned his way into the position and a huge contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Unfortunately for him, his career took a complete nose dive after that. Hopefully, he can get it back on track.
