The Toronto Maple Leafs emerged victorious in a fast-paced game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, winning 4-3 in overtime thanks to a clutch goal from an unlikely scorer, Mitch Marner.
While Marner is undoubtedly one of the team's most talented players, some of his teammates were surprised that he chose to shoot rather than pass in the critical moment, given his status as a pass-first player.
Matthew Knies, in particular, appeared stunned that Marner took the shot and scored the game-winner. In a playful jab, shared by Jesse Blake on X, Knies revealed his reaction:
Teammate Bobby McMann also expressed his surprise, given Marner's reputation for dazzling assists rather than taking shots in key moments.
Ironically, Knies and McMann were the other two goal scorers for the Maple Leafs in the game, lending a bit of humor to their comments, even if they were made in jest.
Knies has certainly been in the spotlight lately -- not only for his strong play and big hits, but also for his quirky and humorous personality, which has contributed to his new nickname, "Brick", among his teammates.
Whether through funny comments or standout performances, Knies has become a key presence on the ice for the Maple Leafs this season, with his 8th goal of the year. As for Marner, his game winning tally was his 6th of the season.
With Auston Matthews sidelined due to injury, other Leafs players, including Marner, have stepped up to fill the gap, and his goal is a clear sign that the team's offensive workload is being shared in Matthews' absence.
