Mats Sundin is often looked at as the greatest Maple Leaf of all time, and for good reason. Sundin holds several records all-time for the Maple Leafs, including the most goals, points and powerplay goals just to name a few.
However, a comparison on X/Twitter has come up, pitting Mitch Marner against Sundin, measuring their success by their point totals across their first 8 seasons.
As per @BigHeadLeafs_ on X:
Mitch Marner has been rumoured to be on the move to just about every team in the league this offseason. It is bizarre to think that Marner is producing at a higher point per game pace than arguably the greatest Maple Leaf of all time in Sundin.
The question that comes up after seeing this comparison is: "Does Marner deserve all the flak he gets?"
Regardless of Sundin's point per game being lower than Marner's, the impact Sundin had on the Maple Leafs during his tenure is unmatched. Sundin almost singlehandedly dragged his team to multiple playoff series wins. Sundin also had some very sub-par linemates during his tenure on the Leafs, like Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky, where as Marner has had superstars Auston Matthews, John Tavares and William Nylander to play with night in and night out.
However, the biggest difference between the 2 is their performance in the playoffs. Sundin was an amazing playoff performer for the Maple Leafs throughout his time Toronto. The same cannot be said for Marner, who disappears in the playoffs when it matters most.
Playoff Series wins in their first 8 seasons with the Maple Leafs:
Mats Sundin: 8
Mitch Marner: 1
We can probably close the book on this discussion, because there really is no comparison.
