A former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman has become a salary cap casualty, being shipped off to San Jose along with a draft pick as a sweetener.

On Saturday, it was reported that former Leafs defenseman Cody Ceci was one of two players the Edmonton Oilers were looking to move to be able to match the offer sheets issued by the St. Louis Blues to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.

Late last night, TSN's Chris Johnston revealed that the Oilers are one step closer to a solution as they traded Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks for 24-year-old defenseman Ty Emberson.

Ceci has one year left on his current deal that carries a cap hit of $3.25M while Emberson has one year left at a substantially less $950K cap hit. The move means the Oilers are now $5.9M over the cap which means they will still have to make a move or two if they intend to match both offer sheets.

Ceci produced 5 goals and 20 assists, totaling 25 points for the Oilers last season, adding 2 goals and 3 assists in 24 contests during the Oilers' run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
