Canadiens' prized summer acquisition Patrik Laine has spoken out about the knee-on-knee collision with Maple Leafs forward Cédric Paré that caused his injury.
''I mean I don't think anybody is trying to hurt anybody I don't know, hockey is a fast game. I kind of put myself in that situation a little bit, D is trying to make a stop. It's just an unfortunate collision. He texted me afterward, and I give him respect for that. Just an unfortunate play.''
In response to the criticism, Pare endured intense scrutiny and even threats online, prompting the Maple Leafs to intervene and disable his social media accounts. Darren Dreger shared this update on X:
''Good for Laine for helping clear this up. Pare has come under fire since this hit and has been abused and threatened via social media. To the point, the Maple Leafs have disabled Pare's accounts.''
Regardless of intent, injuries have plagued Laine throughout his career. After a disappointing stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where Laine played only 18 games in the 2023-24 season, recording 9 points, Laine is looking for a fresh start with Montreal to rejuvenate his career.
As for Cedric Pare, we hope the online hostility subsides, allowing him to focus on his journey to becoming a successful NHL player.
