Per TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the expectation is that the Maple Leafs will be going "big-game hunting" in pursuit of a top flight goaltender to partner with young, skilled netminder Joseph Woll.
Obviously, with the Leafs already having been linked to Juuse Saros (NSH) and Jacob Markstrom (CGY), the report from LeBrun appears to be accurate. The key for the Leafs here will be getting the right guy.
As for the trade chips they have in order to facilitate such a deal, we already know that the team is considering a shake-up at the core of the team, with Mitch Marner, John Tavares and Morgan Rielly all expected to be available this summer. The problem is that all 3 hold full no-movement clauses, so if they will control their own fates.
We also know that Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten and Matthew Knies are off the table, listed as untouchables, which leaves prospects like G Artur Akhtyamov, D Topi Niemela and their 1st round picks in 2024 and 2026 as their top remaining trade chips.
What we could see happen here is a move of a core piece for futures (picks and prospects) which can then be flipped for a goaltender. Of course, until we know for sure that someone will waive their NMC, we shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves.
