Insider reveals what may keep the Leafs from signing both Bertuzzi and Domi
Elliotte Friedman revealed the latest on Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi contract extensions and what could prevent them both from signing with the Maple Leafs.
Recently, it's been reported that the Leafs have held preliminary talks with both Bertuzzi and Domi about contract extensions to keep them both in Toronto for the foreseeable future. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on 'Leafs Morning Take' today and was asked about the latest in both negotiations to which he provided a surprising remark.
Bertuzzi is the interesting one. I also think they want to bring him back, but again I think the Leafs are trying to be really careful about term and that's one thing I was warned that if they lose some of these players it's probably going to be because of term more than AAV."
With almost $20M in cap space, it comes as a bit of a surprise that it is the term causing more of an issue than the dollar amount given the number of changes that GM Brad Treliving is hoping to make this off-season and the projected contracts of both Domi and Bertuzzi.
In addition, when considering the term of the contracts, with a rising cap, the cap hit may matter less over time, which makes the term somewhat irrelevant if they can get a fair cap hit.
