Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has dropped some Mitch Marner news that may not make Toronto Maple Leafs fans feel too good about the situation.

Since the Leafs bowed out to the Bruins in Game 7, suffering yet another disappointing 1st round loss, most of the talk in Toronto has been about cleaning house. Fans seem to want Sheldon Keefe and Brendan Shanahan gone the most, but the next target on their hit list is Mitch Marner.

There has been a lot of dialogue about whether Marner should stay or go this summer, as the Leafs look to improve when and where they can, but on Wednesday's edition of 32 Thoughts, the podcast, Friedman mentioned that Marner's agent, Darren Ferris, may simply advise Mitch to just wait it out and become a UFA.

"I had some real interesting conversations about Marner and a couple people reminded me that Darren Ferris, the agent, he likes to take people to UFA. They said that, based on that, people believe that he will say to Marner, 'you've earned your UFA status. Wait for it.'

Now, maybe that might change. Maybe Marner will feel differently. Who knows what will happen here, but [Ferris'] base advice is usually that. Now, Nick Kypreos, who has been very good on Marner information over the last few years, said that he thinks they will discuss the possibility of being moved, and he may turn out to be right, but that has historically been Ferris' advice. That is true.

A few people warned me that there's going to be a lot of posturing here and you better be careful what you believe and what you don't believe which is true.

Look, this team is waiting until Friday for a reason, and the reason is they probably want to sort out some things. So, like I said, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, and we'll see where we go over the next couple of days."

Obviously, with Marner owning a full no-movement clause, he controls his fate in Toronto. If he wants to remain a Leaf, there's no one who can prevent him from remaining a Leaf.

In having said that, given all of the tension that already exists between the media and Mitch Marner, I'm not completely sold on the idea that he wants to endure a year's worth of mental anguish if he refuses to waive either.

At this point, there's been no indication that the Leafs organization intends to approach any players about waiving their NMC's or NTC's, so until we receive some news on that front, I suppose the hypothetical Marner trade scenarios will remain just that - hypothetical.
