John Tavares and Team Canada suffered a disappointing loss in the Semi-Finals against Switzerland at the IIHF World Championships.

After the Czech Republic took down Team Sweden in the first Semi-Finals of the day, Team Canada was taken down in the later matchup against the Swiss in a hard fought shootout loss.

The Swiss jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead after Kevin Fiala and Nino Niederreiter found the back of the net within a span of 2 minutes and 10 seconds to finish off the first period. Brandon Tanev then cut the deficit in half near the end of the second period before John Tavares tied things up with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation.

Both teams couldn't find the back of the net in overtime so it went to a shootout where Canada lost 2-1. Connor Bedard opened the skills competition with a goal but Pierre-Luc Dubois, Damon Severson, Owen Power, and Dylan Cozens were not able to add on. Meanwhile Fiala and Sven Andrighetto scored for the Swiss who moved onto the gold medal match against the Czechs.

Canada, who won gold last year, will now have to settle for the bronze as they will face Sweden tomorrow. Meanwhile the Swiss will look to win their first ever gold medal but they do have 3 silvers to their name with the most recent coming in 2018.

Tavares' goal was his 2nd of the tournament and his 10th point in 8 games. However, there is still reason to celebrate as David Kampf will have a chance to win gold tomorrow for Czechia as he will look to improve on his 6 points in 8 games this tournament.
