I'm sure, by now, that everyone is either growing tired of the Mitch Marner talk or is already completely over it. Nevertheless, people will continue to talk, especially on social media.
There have been a number of wild Marner trade proposals that have surfaced over the course of the spring and summer, including deals that would send the multi-time 90+ point player to Seattle, Nashville, Vegas and Chicago, among others. However, the latest one might make you physically ill.
Earlier this week, Bodog Casino shared this photoshopped image of Marner in a full Montreal Canadiens uniform, with the caption as follows:
Let's ignore for one second the fact that it's highly unlikely that the Leafs would ever deal Marner within the Atlantic Division. Even if they did deal within the division, what does Montreal have that Toronto might want?
Obviously, the Habs are not dealing 2022 1st overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky. It's likely that they're also not willing to entertain offers on 2023 5th overall pick David Reinbacher. 2024 5th overall pick Ivan Demidov is an interesting piece, but it doesn't help the Leafs now in any way, with their immediate contention window wide open.
Ultimately, the post was probably tossed out there to farm engagement, but nevertheless, I think we can put the chances of Marner landing in Montreal at near-zero, even if he does hit the UFA market next summer. Marner is tired of the unrelenting media pressure that exists in the larger markets, so if he ever did opt to leave Toronto, I'd imagine he'd do so with the intention of signing in a quieter market and likely somewhere a whole lot warmer than Montreal.
