Auston Matthews is off to a good, albeit unspectacular start this season, having amassed 3 goals and 2 assists in 7 games, leading the Maple Leafs to a 4-3-0 record to kick off their 2024-25 campaign.
Matthews received standing ovation during the home opener when introduced by PA Announcer Mike Ross as captain for the first time. He is also coming off of a sensational 2023-24 season, where the Arizona product amassed a remarkable 69 goals in 81 games, en route to his 3rd Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, at the young age of 27.
Matthews has become one of the most influential players in the NHL, which has now earned him not only a spot on the U.S. National Team for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, but the honour of being selected as one of the standout players to showcase the beautiful jerseys, as shared by @BR_OpenIce on X:
Alongside Matthews, notable players in the 4 Nations jerseys include Pittsburgh Penguins legend Sidney Crosby representing Canada, Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho representing Finland, and Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman representing Sweden.
The tournament will take place from February 12-20, 2025, hosted at the Bell Centre in Montreal and TD Garden in Boston, home to the Canadiens and Bruins, respectively.
While I'm not the biggest fan of the design for Canada's jersey, there's no denying that Auston looks sharp in his USA tarp and that William Nylander is going to turn some heads in the Tre Kronor Yellow and Blue for Sweden.
