Leafs Defenseman Jani Hakanpaa Makes Important Decision About His Immediate Future

The Toronto Maple Leafs recently shared an important update on defenceman Jani Hakanpaa, and his recovery from the injury that has forced him to sit out all but two games in the 2024-25 season.

Another update has come from Hakanpaa himself, and he's come to a big decision on representing his home country of Finland at the upcoming 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

Despite what must be a huge honour for him personally, Hakanpaa has come to the conclusion that he should skip the event entirely.

Hakanpaa was, in fact, using the 4 Nations Face-Off as motivation to get back into game shape as soon as possible.

Back in mid-December, Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube told reporters "He's still re-habbing," adding the defenceman would be back in "a few days."

Leafs teammate Auston Matthews recently officially confirmed he was in for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off, and has been named captain for his country.

There is still no timeline for Hakanpaa to return from his injury, with four games to go before the league breaks for the 4 Nations Face-Off.

If the 32-year-old can't return before the NHL's trade deadline March 7, it may have major implications on the Maple Leafs' plans when it comes to adding to their current lineup as the team gets ready to attempt a deep playoff run.
