For new Maple Leaf head coach Craig Berube, the preseason was an opportunity to build comfort with his players and for them to adapt to his style of play. Each player has a unique role essential for the team's success.
In the final pre-season game, a victory against the Detroit Red Wings, Berube showcased his fourth line, which included returning players David Kampf and Ryan Reaves, alongside PTO invitee Steven Lorentz. The trio not only connected for a goal, with Lorentz scoring his first of the pre-season, but their overall performance is what excited Berube the most.
As reported by Terry Koshan on X:
After such a positive showing, it seems likely that this fourth line will start the NHL season together. However, this would require the Maple Leafs to upgrade Lorentz from a PTO to an NHL contract. Berube's comments certainly read like a request of sorts for Treliving and company.
Lorentz has expressed his desire to play in Toronto, sharing his long-held dream of joining his hometown team. He hopes to win a cup with the Maple Leafs, which would be a special achievement for him and his family.
While not primarily known for scoring, Lorentz is big, strong, and plays hard, aligning perfectly with Berube's vision for his fourth line.
If the Maple Leafs decide to sign Lorentz, a trade may be necessary, as they are currently over the salary cap and have an excess of players, particularly forwards. Fans should stay tuned for roster moves leading up to the NHL season opener on October 9th, when the Maple Leafs face the Montreal Canadiens.
