Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs held their annual outdoor practice at Nathan Phillips Square, though those in attendance noticed thwt there were two notable absences. Both Mark Giordano and Jake McCabe were given the day off following the Leafs' win over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. It has become commonplace for the Leafs to give Giordano a day off of practice here and there as they look to keep the league's oldest player fresh for the playoffs. McCabe, on the other hand, was absent following a very rough game that saw him take a blindside hit and get stitches on the bridge of his nose.

This evening, the Leafs made a surprising move, recalling defenseman Max Lajoie from the Toronto Marlies ahead of their game against the Ottawa Senators tomorrow. The move comes as a bit of a surprise as even if the Leafs were to play without McCabe and Giordano tomorrow, they already have Conor Timmins and William Lagesson on the roster.

Does this mean that the Leafs have some sort of deal pending? Or are there more injuries on the blueline than they have made public? At this point, it's unclear, but it does come as a surprise either way. To make room for Lajoie on the roster, the Leafs also placed David Kampf on IR. Kampf has been out this week recovering from an undisclosed injury that Sheldon Keefe said normally takes a couple of weeks to heal.
