The Belleville Senators and the Toronto Marlies engaged in a spirited affair on Saturday, with the former coming out on top over the latter in a shootout. However, the Marlies came back from being down 3-0 in the third period to force overtime with goals from Fraser Minten, Nikita Grebenkin, and Zach Solow.
Overtime solved nothing, so both teams headed into the shootout hoping to steal the extra point. The shootout lasted 12 rounds and the Marlies were only able to score one goal and that came off the stick of the rookie, Minten. He was able to come in with speed before slipping it through the five-hole with relative ease.
Minten credits his shootout goal to Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, as the prospect admitted to emulating his patented move in the skills competition:
Minten has 2 goals and 4 points in 4 games on the season in what is his rookie year with the AHL affiliate in Toronto. The former 2nd round pick from the 2022 NHL Entry Draft suffered a high-ankle sprain during the 2024 Prospects Showcase and missed all of training camp and the start of the regular season.
