When the Leafs stepped up to the podium back in June to announce the 31st overall pick, there weren't too many people out there who were expecting to hear the name "Ben Danford" called. However, the Leafs really liked a lot about the 6'2 right-shot defenseman's game.
Not only is Danford a physical player, capable of landing huge open-ice hits like these, but he's also a player who possesses great vision and hockey IQ, allowing him to jump up in the rush and help out on offense as well, as was evidenced this weekend when he potted his first goal of the season.
The newly-minted captain of the Oshawa Generals has some definite untapped offensive potential -- that much is clear. While he only scored 1 goal all of last year, Danford did tally 32 assists to give him 33 points across 64 games. Thus far through 13 games this season, he already has a goal and 5 assists.
Unfortunately, Danford missed out on the opportunity to attend his first Maple Leafs training camp this fall after being injured during practice ahead of the 2024 Prospects Showcase in Montreal. Danford suffered a concussion and was unable to return to full health in time for the start of camp.
The expectations for Danford this season are high, but for a player who wants to live up to the billing of a 1st round draft pick and a top defensive prospect, I have no doubt that he'll put in the work this season and shine and lead the way that both he and the Leafs believe he can.
